I have never, but my best friends father had a pair that he ran and he loved em. Told me he would never own anything else for rabbits.

THese Bassets that you folks are using: Are they hunting bred. How is their endurance. The only ones I have seen are show one and they are heavy.

I know they have great noses and voice.

Thanks,

Tim's dad had one he bought from a field bred breeder, the other (their first basset) was bought at a pet store in a mall. For stam, we never really got into that kind of talk and that was back before I got back into hunting and into hunting dogs. Sorry that I dont have more info, hopefully someone that actively hunts with a basset chimes in soon.

*Edit* These guys are thick toon, bassets are thick boned dogs.

I did a Google search and came up with this. http://www.albanybassets.co.uk/gallery1.php
Better looking than your typical American Basset, if you ask me.

My brother has a Basset. The only thing is hunts effiecently is whatever is on the counter. :D It ate an entire bag of cookies one time while they were still in the plastic target bag my brother brought them home from the store in. Imagine my brother's surprise when he passed an entire intact target bag in the yard one day. I can't even type this without laughing. But he has a fantastic personality and is probably my 3 year old GSP's best friend in life. Prob not the feedback you were looking for but I couldn't help but share.

Nice post and thanks for sharing. I know, as a boy growing up, Bassets were still pretty popular and good rabbit dogs. I am pretty certain that a lot of that has been bred out of them over the years, but I would think you could still find some field bred ones that would make fine rabbit hounds. I also believe that if you can find a good field breeding, they won't be cheap.

Have breeders caused those short , chesterfield legs? Were they longer years ago?

From what I have seen, I don't believe their legs were any longer, and in my time, beagles were still the most popular breed for rabbits. But when you thought of Basset hound, you thought rabbit hound.

I run my dogs on a nearby conservation area and occasionally cross paths with a guy that hunts rabbits with Bassets. They look more like the dog pictured than those seen at the show and seem to do a pretty good job, he usually leaves with a few bunnies in the bag. He said he used to run beagles and switched when he got older because they were easier to keep up with :D He did say it wasn't easy to find good hunting bassets.
