Dog Boxes

Post by JoePaTurfShoes » Fri Oct 12, 2012 9:00 am

Ok so I know a lot of you transport your dogs in a dog box.

i was just going to have the dog ride with me up front in the cab of my truck. Is this not advised?

Why a dog box? Is it to keep your cab clean or is their more to it than that?

Thoughts?

The dog box or crate or kennel is to keep the dog safe.

Sort of hard to seatbelt a dog.

The size should be rather small for the best protection and should be fasten or strapped down.

An added value is that it keeps nose prints off the windows.

So you put the metal box in the Cab or in the bed of the truck?

How would you mount it temporarily in the bed?

Man am I ignorant on this!

Be careful with metal boxes in Arizona.....Fan is probably a must.

A plastic ruff tuff crate might be better and a simple ratchet strap will hold it down in the bed of the truck.

Get this, In NJ ( I know who'd wanna go there :D ) its illegal to have a dog loose in the cab.
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

Ok got it......you hit the nail on the head.

I was thinking it would be too hot for a dog box.

If she is used to traveling which she has done a lot lately with the breeder who is holding her for me she should be use to vehicles.

I was going to get custom seat covers for the truck and make her ride in the back seat.

Have to see how this all shakes out because I do understand the safety factor there as well without having her restrained.

It's a Boykin - and congratulations on getting her - if you're worried about where she fits inside, they're small enough that they can make a condo out of the console in your pickup.

But I'd have her crated in the back seat (Vari-Kennel model 200 will do you). Boykins also can provide their own down pillows.

Inside the cab I use all wire kennels such as those made by Precision Cage, because they are heavy duty and fold for storage.

I also use these all wire kennels inside my camper shell or topper.

Strap them down or bolt them down.

I have a couple additional reasons fro a dog box besides the safety issue....

1. dog encounters skunk in the field, not allowed in the truck
2. dog encounters gut pile from deer hunter while in the field , not allowed in the truck.
3. dog rolls in random dead critter, not allowed in truck

there are several more to the list but you get the point. I have found that my dogs are perfectly happy in the dog box, they know their place in the truck, much like they know their crate in the house or kennel in the yard...... Matter of fact my neighbors can just about tell you when I am loading the box in the truck from the dogs going nuts in the kennel.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.
