Shock collar stick on

Just was out hunting and my dog had a seizure and don't know why dog has been ran hard her whole life and is just under two, couldn't see the dog for a few minutes so I called and then nicked her with collar on two med. when she came back she wouldn't leave my side then she seized for awhile I have no idea what happened any advise would be great fully appreciated

Did you test the collar on yourself to see if it's sticking?

Yes I did and I always test before putting it on I couldn't get it to stick

can you better describe the siezure and the dog coming in? did she seem kinda spaced out coming back in? drunkin looking?

When she ran back in she wouldn't leave my side acting weird then just had it, no she is acting fine a little high strung more than normal I don't know what to think

Our lab started having seizures just before she turned 2. She got to where she could only hunt for 30-45 min. We never found out what caused them.This was about 10 years ago & they know a lot more now.

Until I hear the extent of this sezuire I can't say much but I can say that it wasn't because of the e-collar sticking. Stress may be a factor in triggering an episode but the dog must have the genes on both sides of the pedigree if it truellly seized.

What kind of dog is it? Some breeds are more common to seize. How hot was it?

Doubt if it was from the collar. My "bet" is hypoglycemia - http://pets.webmd.com/dogs/dog-hypoglyc ... lood-sugar. Had a dog do that to me this summer.

The dog is a German shorthair, the Sizure was from what I know a major one, it wasn't hot about 50 and she has been ran way harder in way hotter days, took her out for some training yesterday just like nothing ever happened

My Boykin has them. He takes a pill a day and hasn't had them since. We tried taking him off pills for awhile but had seizures again. Pills for life. Normal dog with the medication.

I'd go with this. Had a dog years ago that that happened to. The vet said it was hypoglycemia. I don't recall anymore what he did but he advised me to carry a candy bar around and if it starts again give her some. Now I thing karo syrup might be a better idea.

That is the active ingredient and it is used for siezures in mammals (humans take it) usually to prevent siezure after a transplant of some sort. Least thats why the first wife took it, altho it caused her to contract bone cancer which killed her.

There are several medications used to treat seizures in dogs:

~ Phenobarbital (abbreviated pb or phb)
~ Potassium Bromide (abbreviated KBr)
~ Phenobarbital & Potassium Bromide
~ Valium (diazepam)
~ Dilantin (phenytoin)
~ Neurontin (gabapentin)

The least expensive and the one found to be the most effective in more dogs is Phenobarbital.

You need to determine if it is exercise induced hypoglycemia or some other seizure before you
give the dog phenobarbital. The pheno will not work, I am pretty sure, for the seizures caused by hypoglycemia.

Giving the dog a squirt of kayro syrup every 45 min. while hunting will fend off the hypoglycemia seizures. I had a dog with
this problem also. He also showed no signs until was over two years old. I would feed a double portion or as much as the dog will eat if he won't eat all that, the evening before. No food in the AM but any water he wants is OK. Then use the kayro during the hunt. It worked well for my dog.
