Puppy destroying my yard
Puppy destroying my yard
Like it says my beautiful yard is getting destroyed. Now I expected to lose some flowers and a few dead grass spots. But she is digging holes like a "bleep" gopher. She is never unsupervised for more than 20 mins out back. But that's all it takes to dig a grave. I run her in the hills everyday and my wife walks her in the evening. What can I do to stop the digging? I would like to have a dog and enjoy my yard. Please help me save her life and my sanity.

Re: Puppy destroying my yard
Cayenne pepper broadcast on the yard will help. You might also consider making her a digging area. Do you have a vermin problem? If so, that's attracting her.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

She's digging up rocks and roots to chew on.

Re: Puppy destroying my yard
Very few dedicated bird dog owners have fancy yards. When I did a home visit for GSP rescue once they told me to be sure the yard was not too fancy. It was a criteria to check and it made me laugh but its true.
Kennel or full time supervision -- those are your best options. You probably do have moles... they are my birddogs other pasttime

I didn't realize having a mowed lawn with a few flowers was a fancy yard. I do have a dog run for her I just thought maybe she didn't have to be locked up all the time. I guess for now ill just have to keep an eye on her.

They don't mind being "locked up". They will find something to keep occupied no matter where you put them. You just gave the dog too much freedom.

I got my first trained Britt from someone who wanted a pretty yard. You need to trade your young dog for an old dog!

YES You can have a nice yard and a bird dog at the same time. You can teach your pup to pee and poop in a small area so you don't have huge brown patches all over your lawn. You just have to learn exactly how to manage the dogs energy in a positive way.
Dogs dig because it's fun.... for them. It expends some energy, so now YOU have to work with your dog on mental and physical exercise MORE often to meet their energy needs. Obedience work will help the mental part and there lots of ways of giving a high energy more exercise but leaving your dog outside unattended only results in bad thing for you.
Yes a kennel run will help a lot for when you leave the house. Proper chew toys in the kennel are needed too. Rotating toys helps too so they don't get bored with same toys all the time. They don't need all the toys out all the time.
I am sure you can search the internet for info on entertaining and managing a high energy dog. Looking outside the gundog world will help.

Build a kennel run if you want a nice well groomed yard. Pea gravel or concrete with cyclone fencing.

X3................ I mean, c'mon. You have to figure that any area the pup has access to will be destroyed.deseeker wrote:X2Doc E wrote:One EXTREMELY simple answer --------------------- Kennel Run.

Section off an area so they can call it their own and be done with it.

Ah! I have the same problem with my pup. We tried letting her have one hole but she cannot resist fresh earth and is constantly making new ones. I think it's also partly related to the critters that started some of the holes.
