chattering jaws...

My lil guy ( almost 2 years old) is starting to do this chattering/shivering thing with his mouth. It's like he's cold but I live in Phoenix az and its in the high 70s in the house and not much cooler outside. Is this just a weird thing gsp's do or am I the only one with the unique dog. Just wondering what you guys think. Thanks a lot!

My foundation sire ( Ace) use to do that on different ocassions but I never thought much about it.I have a Gr Son of his now that also does it,seems to do it when he is trying to get my attention.

how true especially with GSPs . My big male will do it in a teal blind in 90 degree September weather or Janurary on the way to chase woodcock or quail.

Na, it is excitement. Had a Grey Hound that did the same thing. I thought it was neat.

Got a dog here that will do it when he is in pain,got another one here that does it because of the heat.

My parents female gsp does the same thing when she is excited whether she knows she is going hunting, training, dinner time. I have always related it to excitement.

My Male does it quite regularly. I know a few guys that their GSP's do it also. I think it is just a quirk in the breed. Nothing special or anything to worry about.

Only other breed I have seen do it is a Lab.

Male dogs definitely do it in reaction to smelling a female, but I've also seen my female Weim do it when excited/nervous and my female ACD has done it as well.

It's not breed specific. I have a male Vizsla that does it anytime a female in heat is near.

Dogs possess an additional olfactory chamber called the vomeronasal organ that also contains olfactory epithelium. The vomeronasal organ, known as Jacobson’s organ, consists of a pair of elongated, fluid-filled sacs that open into either the mouth or the nose. It is located above the roof of the mouth and behind the upper incisors. Dogs can 'taste' scent. It's called Flehmen. By chattering the teeth, they are gathering the scent into the Jacobson's organ located on the roof of the mouth to 'taste' it, concentrating it, to get a better 'picture' of the animal or object they are sniffing. Sometimes it can get really intense causing saliva to drip or foam along with the chattering. Ultra excited as in a female in heat. Both males and females do it.

Could be a lot things besides a female in heat, I had a clown granddaughter who did it, when waiting to be turned loose when hunting or training, would do it as soon as you put her in the box to go hunting. Sometimes she would do it when waiting to be fed.

No telling, but I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a female pointer who "chews air" and chatters her teeth when there is a snake around.
