Weekend Chukar Hunt

Post by Gertie » Sun Nov 18, 2012 7:35 pm

Met up with a couple gal pals for a "broad squad" chukar hunt this weekend. We did about 9 miles of hiking in beautiful country (Gertie did 27!!!) and got into five big coveys of chukar and one covey of quail. Both Gertie and Ruger (the rescue I'm hosting) did really well. Gertie crept a little but I think it was due to the really strong wind making it hard for her to pin the location of scent, at least I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt until I can get her in better conditions and see what's up. Ruger did good with the exception of him not really knowing what "here" means. We're working on it. As is the norm, nobody managed to take any photos of the cool stuff but we did get a few pictures when we were taking breaks. I really feel fortunate to be able to hunt in this country. Public land is cool 8)

Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun. Hopefully we get into more birds next weekend and the wind tones it down a notch or 10. Fingers crossed :D

Nah, they're way deep in the "friend zone", especially since the whole "neutering thing" happened

I was actually in So. Cal. a couple months ago for work and saw some chukar in the highway median between Bishop and Tehachapi. Lots of them! There were also a bunch of quail in the mountains by the big wind energy development near Jawbone State Park. Don't know if you ever head out that way but it might be worth a trip.

Looks like a fun Hunt Gertie! My little Hat's had 18 miles on her feet compared to my 6 this last weekend on the John Day hunting chukar, she was all over them hillsides, so proud!. She saw a lot of birds.. The birds really held well this weekend. They just kept drawing us deeper and deeper!
Nice pics!

That's awesome! Glad you got out too. We're going to hit it again this weekend and I'm not-so-secretly hoping that it's cold and snowy so we can weed out the fair weather Thanksgiving crowd  Congrats on the pup! That's great that she's getting into the birds. It's so much fun watching them come along.
