Would a bell keep coyotes away?
Would a bell keep coyotes away?
I just got back from running Scout out in the desert. When we left, there was a coyote that had come within about 20 yards of me, and was at least that close to him. It wasn't acting aggressive or anything, just standing there watching us, but I called Scout in and we left. Do you think putting a bell on his collar might help keep coyotes out a little farther from him? Startle them a little so they don't care to investigate?

I doubt it....
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

May act as a dinner bell for some, but may bump them on out of the area.

As smart as habituated coyotes are, it would more likely attract them.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

At 20 yards, a 12 gauge would deter them.

I think a few Komondors would do a better job.

Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to shoot them ... they receive full protection from the government since they're on a military base.
