Blinking???

Post by campgsp » Fri Dec 14, 2012 1:11 am

I don't know what I should call it.
Took my dads pup out with me yesterday to do a pen phez hunt with a friend. The dog was going around and would sniff a spot and take a leak. Thought nothing of it at first. Then it continued more and we got wondering. Bitch in heat? Or something. We walked over a spot he peed on and a phez busted up. No shot taken. Then it happened a few more times. So I shot one down to see something, I was right full of pee. The dog was going around marking birds with his pee.
This ever happen to anyone on pen raised or wild.

It seemed the only thing the dog was interested in yesterday were rabbits. Pointed those fine . It went from phez hunt to only rabbit hunt. One phez and 8 rabbits.
How do I go about breaking this blinking if that what I should call it or peeinking.

Stinky bird problem, is my bet. They were kept too crowded and smelled like ammonia. I have a dog that loves to mark bird crates.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Id stop hunting this dog in this kind of situation. You're just asking for bigger problems down the road.

PLUS 1 ! I've had a couple of otherwise good pointers that would detect the human hand scent on a bird or on the cage it was in and would check but not hold point then move in to pee on the bird. ..... A sign of complete contempt for the situation perhaps ?

Simple!!!!!

In the training and teaching to this point, someone has been applying pressure and he is now telling u that he does not like it.

It may not be a case of too much pressure as I've had finished dogs do it with planted birds and these dogs were seasoned. Hard to diagnose on the net so you can't just write it off as too much pressure.

peeing on a bird does not seem like something that is pressure induced. :? cajuncasey's theory makes some sense.

Thank for your thoughts folks.

I don't think its from to much pressure. He was ff months ago and has had many birds shot over him since.
I'm thinking to much human scent is the problem.

He pointed the rabbits fine, held a.d retrieved. I planted some quail for him today and he did fine also.

On a side note. My wife cleans the birds and I didn't tell her about the pee.Her reaction was priceless :D

Could it be from having 500 different dogs in this field in the last week, you said planted pheasant if they are hunting the same field 2 times a day with no rain in 2 weeks i'm just thinking here

I don't think that would cause him to pee on the birds though.
At first when he was going around marking that's what I thought it was.
