I bought one of those cheap barriers for my exterra. You get what you pay for, the couplings are already stripped out and it rattles. Anybody know of a good suv barrier or dog box that would fit? Ive been checking out easyloaderkennels duece model for $300 seems decent.

I wouldn't pay $300 for top-brand, aluminum diamond plate dog box. Okay, that's an exaggeration. ;) But, honestly, you can get on SearchTempest.com and search all of Craig's List listings for dog boxes. Not sure what you would find in the middle of hunting season, I get all my stuff through there and pay next to nothing for it. My go-to box is a wonderful, light sheet-metal box (would fit a mini-SUV, come to think of it) I paid $50 for.

I keep my GSP in a wire crate that fits behind the last row of seats in my Ford Escape.....I was lucky enough to find one that has a 2nd door on the side. I placed the crate in the back sideways so that the door that is normally on the side now faces out. I bought a dog bed to throw on the inside. There's just enough room on both sides to keep a box full of equipment and such.

I have the gate behind the seat in my Cheorkee but they go around it like it wasn't there so I took it out. The two airline crates went in but fitting them was tuff and took up the whole back. Now I use my Bronko. I don't have $300 to spend on new crate's so I'm gonna remodel the ones I have. Cut out the back and make a new one that will shorten them enough to fit.

I bought one recently and started assembling it and never finished. I laughed at how few tubes came in the box and knew I'd have shorthairs crawling through to the front.

When I've got one dog, I have a smaller wire crate that has the 2 doors, so I can position it pretty easily. When I take 2 dogs, I throw both in one bigger wire crate, otherwise I have no room left for gear in my Jeep. A hitchhauler has been working pretty well on hunting trips, as a transitional step to get them out of the crate, and collar/vest them up.

Yes the gates are a joke..I wasted $80 on one. Stripped the couplings just assembling it. I do have a wire crate a side door but I have 2 dogs so that wouldnt work and i dont think 2 seperate crates would fit. Think ill try the easyloader duece.

Put the dog in a plastic crate (VariPet is a good one).
Be sure to strap the crate down tightly.

A crate is the equivalent of seat belts and air bags for the dog.

I would but I have two dogs and they both wont fit in one crate, and two crates wont fit in the back of my exterra. An XL crate may work for two dogs though, ill have to check some out.

Midwest makes crates that are normal size, LxH, but the width is smaller. They are specifically designed for use in SUVs. I have them in my Pathfinder. I know the Xterra is smaller but not sure how much. You need to have 42" for 2.

The answer to your question.....

will quite possibly be found at a similar thread I started a long while ago entitled "Crate Size and SUVs". I got good advice..mostly. See below.

As an addendum, the Ruff Tough Kennel (see early suggestion) crate is excellent, tales less space than others, but is heavy and not easy to move as a result of no "lips" on the side. Visit the site (see oost) and see which size will work.

I ended up getting a used Ford Expedition,by the way (refers to my thread, not yours), and am delighted with it. I adjusted to the size much more easily than I thought I would. Belated thanks to all those who contributed to my thread,

Better measure. Not many SUVs are 49 1/2 inches betwen the wheel wells.

Im going to double check tomorrow. The rough toughs are 20"wide each and the duece easyloader is 42" wide halfway up where the lip is, 38" wide at the bottom and top.

This is very good advice. What you see from the outside is not always the same as the interior dimensions.

Xteras have a lot of space, but not necessarily when the back seat is up. However, that being said, they are great single-dog vehicles. We had one until we got GSP #2; now we have a Pathfinder.

I cut out a used hog panel, just zip tied it to the back of the seat. No rattles. Panel hadn't been used for 30yrs so no smell :D

Ruff Tough intermediate sized kennels are 20 lbs and you can get an optional handle kit with them. I wouldn't call that heavy. Just take the dog out first next time you try to move it, it helps. :D

Build something like this. I believe it cost me just over $100. The doors are $10 each.
