Shots and wormer

Post by ohiogsp » Wed Aug 23, 2006 3:36 pm

I always do my own stuff. I do the DHLPP (anually), Ivomec injectable-orally(monthly), Nemex wormer(anually), and lymes vacinations(anually). My question is I like to do this annual stuff in the same month but I never do 2 things given orally or 2 injectables in the same day. Does this matter? For instance wormer and the ivomec or DHLPP and lymes vac at the same time?

Just curious. Why the need for the nemex wormer annually? Is your dog testing positive with the annual stool test? I guess I've never had my vet recommend anything but heartworm preventative for taking care of any parasites/worms?

I guess its up to you, we do all of our horse stuff ourselves I just don't know enough I guess about the dog to know what to give, and it could be the same stuff? I have always asked the reps that I buy my vaccines from, and its always questions to the most reputable person never the green horn or anything but I guess use your better judgement, and I dont see anything wrong with preventive medicine so long as it isnt causing the dog problems.

My question is more about giving 2 things at the same time. 2 shots on the same day. 2 items that are given orally. Is there any bad effect from mixing nemex and ivomec in the stomach. Or can there be bad effects from giving all this stuff on the same day like over loading the dog with medicine?

I use Albendazole for whips and tapes twice a year. In those months, I skip the Ivermectin.

Do you have a link for the Lyme disease vaccine?

Chaingang, I don't have alot of stuff done on my dogs at the vet including annual stool samples. I don't believe nemex is bad for the dog to have anually, so it is just preventive.

It is kind of pricy but my friend has 2 GWP's that both got it last year and we have lots of ticks here.

Maybe I should be doing that Albendazole. None of the stuff I do works on whips. I don't think. Where do you get it? Is it pricy?

I order mine from Jeffers. It's cheap and it gets the whips, tapes and about anything else. Fenbendazole will do the same, I think. It's just whichever you can get.

Thanks for the link!

Sorry, Misunderstood the question, I work in human medicine and there is a little pocket book called the pharmacopia that you can buy at barnes and noble that will give you drug interactions, whether one drug will be bad for your dog if given at the same time is what i mean. There might be a veternarian type book you can buy I am not sure though, or if your vet is nice you might be able to ask questions. another good source is a PDR but that is for human meds so if there is such a thing for dogs?
sorry I wasnt anymore help,
Chris

I too, would do them at different times. Reduces the risk for vaccine reactions among other things. I do not know about the oral meds, there is a drug book for vets on drug interations and such. It's dark blue and also comes on CD. Can not for the life of me recall the name - I have to look it up.

As for the whips, they have a 3 month life cycle. If I were to treat for them on a semi-annual basis I would treat 4 time per year. Every 3 months. My neighbors dog died from whips last year... had been on heartgard (ivermectin and pyrantal) which as you said doesn't cover whips. Panacure is what the vets use for across the board wormers (excluding ceratin sp. of tapes). Whips are harder on very young, very old, pregnant, whelping, lactating, ill, and dogs who are at high stress levels competively such as sled dogs, racing dogs, and I would presume field trial dogs... but any dog can become suddenly ill from them.

My vet has administered both the DHLPP and Lymes vaccine at the same time along with the Bordatella (sp) shot. Not saying that's a good thing though. I give Interceptor monthly and have had to do Panacur at the same time as well. Very pricey going through the vet with multiple dogs but I just don't have enough confidence in myself to dispense my own drugs.

Does anyone here do the DHLPP + Lepto vaccine??? The Lepto vacc has been a big push around here the last 1-2 years but after I've heard about the adverse affects, I opt out of that one. One of my pups on Long Island had a bad reaction to it but yet I've heard of local pups getting the illness. Really on the fence on that one.

I've discontinued the Lymes shot too and use Advantix during the tick months. Lymes vacc is another questionable...

I have given the lepto vaccine with the last 2 series of shots and then never again. Now there is suppose to a safer lepto vaccine out I gave to Homer (gsp) and Eve (mastiff pup) I also don't vaccinate yearly. My old vet would not give the Lymes vaccine -I pretty much follow the Dr Dodds protocol I have seen so many problems from over vaccinating as well as vaccine reaction. I never give Rabies with any other vaccine and I don't give the lymes or bordatella vaccine - I haven't for years.

There a vet version of the Merck Manual on line. You may be able to find some info there.

For those of you in the medical field, you will recognize the name.
