The Importance of Pedigree and Papers?

Post by ScottE » Sun Mar 17, 2013 3:44 pm

I git my Brittany from a local pet shop for a bargain price ($100) because they weren't selling. At the time I didn't know anything about buying a gun dog. I don't have any papers and don't know anything about the breeder. So how important is all that?

Without registration papers your dog will be excluded from alot of the dog games---no trials, no shows, etc. You can get a special number from AKC(for a fee) and enter their hunt tests and earn hunt test titles. Since you do not have a registration number, any pups produced by your male will never be able to be registered, which will limit their price and ability to sell easily. As far as hunting it will have no effect on that---you can always hunt your dog. If you ever have to give up your dog(move, new job, etc where you can't take the dog with), it is a little harder to get them placed because it takes out the people that want to use the dog in competion or know their backround. Even though I give papers with my pups, only about 65% of the new owners register their pups, which kind of surprises me

It's not important at all as long as you only intend to hunt with your dog & have no intentions of competing or testing in certain types of sanctioned trials etc.If you ever decided the dog was good enough to breed, not many want to buy un papered pup or breed to them. There is one big thing you probably never thought of,if your pup comes up unhealthy who would you fall back on,I can garauntee the pet shop would laugh at you,but if you bought from a reputable breeder with registered dogs you would have some kind of recource.

Not all, but the majority of pups from pet shops are from puppy mills.

I think its super important. Not so much papers but knowing the dog's background. However, I'm sure your dog will do just fine if you're just lookin for a hunting companion. Dogs don't know whether they have a good pedigree or papers

I got my GSP for FREE. Yes for free. The mom had pups, and she had papers yet the dad did not and the family just wanted to get rid of the puppies. So of course I took one gladly :) papers aren't important to me at all. He's got a nose on him and is already pointing things at 13 weeks old. I couldn't be happier with him, and he will be an excellent hunter, which is what I got him for. No shows, no competitions, just for my own enjoyment and to have fun hunting with him and when we brings friends along. I also do not plan on breeding him and will be getting him fixed actually. Hes a hunting family dog. And thats exactly what I wanted!

Papers don't mean anything to the dog, only to you. And if your happy with your pup without them, and you know what you can and can't do without papers then that's all that matters.

I would have liked to compete with him but I'm happy just hunting with him. He's been great for me so far and I'm having a blast with him.

If you decide in the future to get some titles on him, you can get an AKC PAL registration and run him in hunt tests, rally, obediance. Pal registraion cost $35 and takes 2 pictures of the dog and a filled out form. The dog has to be nuetered. This does not have to be done right away, it's available down the road if you want to do a few dog games. You can look up information on the AKC web site and type --PAL-- in the search box. :D

Just for kicks, and I'm sure its been answered on here before. But what would happen if people with dogs wanted to get papers? Would we just have to have a DNA test done and go through the processes with the AKC, which I'm sure would be really expensive too.

If the breeder did not register the litter with a recognized registry there is not much you will be able to do - there is no other process by which to register dogs.

Oh well that's fine in my case. So basically even if I did breed my GSP then there would be no way to get his pups papers since he doesn't have any ? Or could I register that litter?

A good dog is a good dog regardless of papers. I don't play the dog games and I don't need a judge's opinion or a ribbon for the wall. The dogs I do sell have three prices akc full is double the price of no paper. Akc limited is in the middle. I will take a monetary loss but I am ensuring that the pup is going to a home for the dog he is and not for the money they will make breeding. Also I can corner the market

That's right, without a registered dam and sire you will not be able to register the litter.

You may still be able to find a local club that will let you run...

Why am I thinking NSTRA doesn't require papers?

Dogs must at least be eligible for registration in order to compete in NSTRA. Papers must be in hand for a dog to be considered eligible. Any placement by an unregistered, but eligible, dog will be voided if the NSTRA office doesn't recieve a registration number within 60 days.

From the NSTRA website under 2011 PDF Rulebook:
"8.04 A dog must be eligible to be registered with a recognized
registry to enter any NSTRA trial.
a. NSTRA recognizes the NSTRA, AKC (no PAL/
ILP registered dogs), FDSB, and CKC (Canadian
Kennel Club) registries. However, regardless of
which registry is used, the dog must be eligible
to be registered in the NSTRA registry as a
recognized pointing dog breed to be entered in any
NSTRA trial.
b . Owners having dog registration pending will be
responsible for completion of registration within
(30) days of placement.
c. No placements will be recorded until the
registration number is forwarded to the National
Office(NSTRA, AKC [no PAL/ILP registered
dogs], FDSB, CKC [Canadian Kennel Club]).
After sixty (60) days, if no registration number has
been received and/or verification that one exists,
the placement will be void and all placements will
be adjusted.
i 23 i
Application: There is no question pertaining to dogs that
are already registered, only those that are eligible to be
registered. For a dog to be eligible for registration means
the owner has registration papers in hand. 2/96"
