Blown Pads Help
Blown Pads Help
Dog is running in his breed championship in a few days - completely ripped 2 of his pads off today. He was still going strong, but when I watered him at 45 I noticed a small limp. Lots of blood and front right and back left pads are completely gone on the main pad, just a flap over hanging the raw pad. He is a very tough dog and doesn't feel pain - just want to make sure he can run his best this weekend.
I soaked them in salt water tonight and cleaned them out. I'll cut the flaps off tomorrow once the skin dries and dies off.
For the trial this weekend I plan on super gluing over the open area then putting boots over them. I'll duct tape the boots on the ankle.
Any other tips? Thanks!

Re: Blown Pads Help
No advice for the current problem, but the best way to toughen pads is from the inside out.
one - 50 mg tablet of Zinc Gluconate once a day for 30 days.
Then maintain with one 50 mg tablet, three times a week.

Blown Pads Help
I use stuff called Musher's Secret. It's 100% natural wax and works real well.

Re: Blown Pads Help
I've run my dog in shoot to retrieve trials with blown pads, soaked in epsome salts and taped her up with vet wrap, no problems really. I would take a piece of vet wrap and make a wide pad by folding the piece a couple times (place pad under foot) then tape them up to the ankle joint. Bout the best you can do with such short amount of time.
I use Cut Heal on wounds otherwise....

I cut mole skin to the size of the wound on the pad and then super glue that on to the pad. This has worked well for me in the past.

Re: Blown Pads Help
you are on the right track. My vet told me to super glue and put him in a boot while out hunting. Seemed to work fine for us

He did well - I re-taped one foot at 30 mins with duct tape and he finished the hour fine, but very sore. He is almost back to 100% pads now.brad27 wrote:I guess his pads were ok?

Don't know if anyone is interested, but the stuff that works awesome is an ointment from the following contact:
Aurora Animal Clinic
1651 College road
Fairbanks AK 99709
Ph. (907)-452-6055
My dad bought the stuff for his beagles. Comes in a big tub in either a pink ointment or a blue ointment. I used some of the pink ointment on my pup one day after her feet got tore up from crusty snow. The next day I couldn't see where the wounds were. Amazing stuff!
