Quail price?

Post by big_fish » Fri Apr 19, 2013 4:01 pm

so I have a few quail left over and was going to order 100 more and maybe sell a few to help on the cost. What would you think is a fair price for a flight conditioned bird? just a thought because if I do decide to sell them I have to get a different permit for them($40 instead of $25 plus the cost of the bands from the state(ohio) )
thanks

The guy I get birds from for dogs that are constrained and corded, I'll pay $4 each. For decently conditioned birds I'll pay $5 each. But, there's a friend of mine about 45 minutes west of here, between here and Tulsa, who has a preserve and lets me buy as few or many birds as I like and train on his grounds. His flight pen is about 50x200 and fifteen foot high. Dogs just don't catch his birds, they're like rockets and as strong as I've seen. I'll pay $8 for his birds. I've been heading out every weekend, buy the birds (I figure $4 for the bird and $4 for insurance that the dogs don't catch them is worth it), drive around the training area and throw them out the window, then park the pickup bya pond or creek and turn Moxy out and work her in a big loop, then put her up and take the other two out and work them ont he same birds. The thought of $8 makes me wince, but I work them each twice and strong-flying birds are priceless.

I paid $3 apiece for 10 this morning. I was pretty happy with that.

I start out in the late spring at $3 and it gets up to about 4 or 4.25 by late winter. I usually get 30 or so at a time for my Johnny House. 3.50 is a good average over the course of a year.

You pay for pigeons?
$5.50 a head for bobwhite. I'm going to look at Asians because I'm working broke dogs and puppies this summer.

Let me know what you find out about the Asians. I've got a litter coming I wanna introduce.

I've been thinking about keeping some quail. What is required to keep them such as how to house them, etc.
Thanks

You'll need to post your location, because each state has their own requirments as to permits, use, tagging, and training.

I was just quoted - in person, face-to-face, $20 each for bobwhite. I'm not kidding. I was at a loss for words - well, just for a couple seconds. Those that know me would say I'm NEVER at a loss for words. Anyway, I thought I had heard him wrong, so I said, "Twenty dollars for how many?" "One", was his answer. Apparently, he has people that pay that much.

tipants in ohio you need 1 of 3 permits ( depends on what you are doing with them ) and leg bands you buy from the state for keeping bobwhites nothing is required for any other quail I keep ours in a 4x6 with 2 levels but if I buy a bunch I will need a bigger set up I buy my feed from tractor supply.

fran I saw where an outfit wanted 170 for a dozen and that blew me away. I'll hatch my own before I pay 20 for one although I have seen valley and mountaln quail for 30 a pair but bobwhites it seems between 3 to 5

big_fish, New pup will be here May 8. decided I want to have birds to get her on by mid summer. What I'm looking for is what kind of pen do I need and how much space I need to give each bird. In general, info on how to keep the birds alive and healthy and any other good info. I guess the permits come from the state? This morning the guy at the mill gave me a couple names as to where to get some birds, I'll give them a call Monday. Once I get the pen built and the birds in all I need to do is figure out how to use them.

So, any and all info will be appreciated. Thanks
