Went for a Drive

Post by topher40 » Thu Aug 29, 2013 11:43 am

Went for a drive last night for about an hour before sunset and was invigorated by what I saw! I was able to spot 3 separate healthy coveys with 15-25 birds each along the roads. These were all on grounds that I hunt and train on. As of now I havent been able to train much due to an accident and the crops are still in so I havent been able to get out INTO the fields so this was nice to see. I also saw 6 singles on the sides of the roads. Should be a great year this year!

I have been seeing singles and pairs all spring and summer, my point was that these birds are starting to covey up and create communities.

Does anyone have a forecast or experience with the NW (Wakeeney) part of Kansas? I hope to get out there right after Thanksgiving. I've had some success with quail and pheasant there in the past.

I have land in that area, not expecting much. Farmer seen hardly any birds during wheat harvest. Advised us it's not worth making the trip. A friend is in that area this weekend for dove, says it looks terrible.

That's a good report and similar to what I've seen around here the last couple of days.

I am cautiously optimistic that this season could be an improvement over the last couple, of course that wouldn't be saying a lot.
