He's doing it! He's pointing!

Post by m2244 » Wed Sep 11, 2013 9:45 am

So, we went through some tough times with our Ryman Setter earlier this year but he's matured quite a bit over the past 6 months. I have been told that Rymans tend to mature a little bit slower than other breeds. He is about 1.5 years old now. I've been taking him out in the woods for a little pre-season work on grouse and woodcock.

Last night we were making our way back to the car when his bell stopped in a small clump of woods up ahead of me but he tends to stop a lot so I didn't give it much thought. As I got closer I could see him about 30 yards away from me, facing my general direction. Then i noticed that his head was moving slowly. He was following a bird that was running around right in front of him. At this point he had been pointing for a good 15 seconds. So I walked into the woods toward him when the woodcock finally went up about 3 feet away from each of us. Cooper had emergency surgery about 8 months ago which cost me $2000; Right after this point I told him to consider us even.

That was the coolest thing! I have wanted a pointer since I was a kid, part of me finds it hard to believe I finally have one. Now I need to get a good video of him pointing, friends and family want to see it.

Congrats, patience pays off with those type of Setters......continue to be patient and only shoot pointed birds and you should be golden.

Thanks for the advice. Patience is something I wish I had a lot more of. I am so into this dog now that he calming down at home (the pointing goes a long way too).

That is great news!
I would have my shotgun and shells ready when the season comes in. Once he figured out that you shoot the birds for him, you will be set.

sooner or later it had to happen! Just like the guy who asked the farmer; "do you think it will rain?" and the farmer says, "it always does, sooner or later".

It's almost like magic. I feel like a 42 year-old kid.
