Labradoodle!

Post by Samm87 » Sat Sep 21, 2013 8:55 pm

Has anyone ever hunted with a labradoodle or know anyone that has? Good experience or bad? Opinions on the "breed" in general.

Labradoodle isn't a breed but simply a cross between two breeds. It takes a lot of time and culling to produce a new breed that will breed true to form.

As said above it's not a breed.

The people that are doing this with poodles and labs are not even remotely interested in whether either dog was a good hunting dog or not. All they are seeing is dollar signs.

I wouldn't even waste my time thinking about one.

IF and only IF either parent or both were worked would I consider it. It's unfortunate that there are people just slapping these retriever breeds with any old poodle and calling them "...........doodles"

Buyer beware!

All of the above, but I have met folks that have trained them to hunt and have been happy with them,
Not my first pick for a hunting, dog but if it's what you got, its always worth a go, worst case you will end up with a pet dog with good OB training.

But if SWMBO wants a low shead dog and you want a hunter there are options. and probably cheaper than a ...doodle

Right I get it's not a "real breed" of dog so that aside I was just curious if anyone was trying to hunt them since origianally they were both (labs and poodles) bred as retrievers/gun dogs.

I've met quite a few and as a pet? I'd say not a bad dog. Wouldn't put much faith behind one being an outstanding hunting dog though

As stated before bred not to hunt but to be non shedding....people who are doing it "right" have bred out to make sure they are non-shedders. the ones in the paper are people breeding lab to a poodle and expecting them to not shed.

There a few very nice ones in my retriever club. They have all the tools to be great water dogs on paper but crossing doesn't mean you get those traits. The ones I know are owned by people with Labs and their Doodles seem every bit as good in the water. I doubt this is the norm in fact most of the other dogs I have seen have serious behavioral issues. Not sure if its very inexperienced owners drawn to the novelty or just bad breeding.

With focused breeding I can't see why they couldn't be as good a cross as a Pudelpointer. I will tell you one thing they have tremendous speed and stamina and extremely intelligent. Good trainers like guys on here could probably make some good dogs out of them.

Pudelpointers are not a cross breed and have no relation to a poodle.

Pudel is German while the Poodle you are speaking of is French.

this breeder uses the phrase "modern poodle"

Poodles come from different counties and are different sizes and yet they are not related in their history. The pudelpointer was from the German pudel of many many yeas ago

So really the pudel pointer is just 100 years ahead of the labradoodle and it's just a pick your poison on what mutt you want
