Post by GSP7 » Mon Sep 30, 2013 6:33 pm

What are you guys putting in your pigeon water so the wont get sick and croke?

Saw some bags of powder stuff at the feed store.

Sodium phosphate or something like that? Cant remember the name.

They had a couple few different kind of anti-bacteria powders for poultry water

I put a cap full of bleach in every 5 gallon i rarely have a problem inless mice or black birds get in the coop. First signs of the birds getting fluffy i treat them with 4-1 for 7 days. Alot of guys put apple-cider vinger in the water

Put a bit of bleach or ACV in it if you're worried. ACV is good for respiratory conditions

Over 20 yrs hey just got water with nothing in it. Then reading about vinegar, I started putting a tablespoon in their water. next came some poultry antibiotic. Have been doing it about a year and don't notice even one difference.

Apple Cider Vinegar is basically put in the water to create an acidic environment in the gut. This prevents e.coli and salmonella from living there and thus keeps them healthier. That being said, you don't need to do it every day either. Maybe once a week, if that... Some guys use bleach, which does the same thing, but I think it's a bit rougher on the birds, and don't use it. Also you have to worry a bit about over dosing them, whereas with ACV, you really don't... I do bleach out their waterers though.

It's worked for us, we've done alright in the races, but at this point, we are just trying to keep birds "up" so to speak for the next race.

This thred is the first I've heard about using bleach. Bleach is caustic, I'd think to much could kill the birds. I put bleach in out city water but I doesn't amount to a whole lot, can't smell it and can' taste it. If you checked our well water here you'd find there isn't a capful per 5 gal of water, a lot less. But if it works for you, I guess it's alright. Just wouldn't care for putting something caustic in the water. The only reason i's done here in town is the state requires it.
