Loss of apetite

Post by atothek » Mon Nov 25, 2013 8:00 pm

Hey everyone,
Last week my 9 week old gsp was diagnosed with giardia and coccidia. He has been on metronidazole, albon suspension and panacur c. He seems to have lost some of his apetite, which makes giving him the full dose of panacur c powder difficult to administer. He will eat a little out of my hand if I try to feed him that way. Does annoying else have any experience with these meds and this sort of behavior?
Thank you
Aaron

A side effect of metronidazole is anorexia.

If your aren't already doing it, try dosing the meds at different times/feedings rather than shotgunning all at once. You might even ask your vet about treating one parasite, then the other.

You might try tempting your pup to eat with a little canned food or canned cat food mixed in his regular kibble. When my dogs go off their feed, I reduce the ration and give them a little less each meal than they normally get. The little bit of going hungry makes them eager to consume whatever's put in front of them.

IMO, you are triple treating. The Flagyl should have taken care of everything.

Thanks for the advice, I will give it a try. The good thing is he is getting plenty of water. Yeah Cajun it seems like a lot of meds, I thought he would only need the metronidazole but I don't know enough about it to not follow the vets instructions.

We stick everything in peanut butter....wet spoon, pill stuck in a bit of peanut butter, and it slides right off the spoon when they lick it and don't even know there's a pill in there.

Metronidazole won't treat coccidia. That's what the Albon is for. Panacur should get the giardia, so you could drop the metronidazole, but talk to your vet first. Basically your vet is double treating the giardia. Giardia can be tough to get rid of, and your dealing with a pup that has another intestinal parasite on top of it, so his immune system is gonna be pretty stressed. I've seen a couple of adult dogs that required metronidazole and Panacur at the same time to resolve giardia. What dose of metronidazole is the pup on and what does he weigh?

Haha yeah. The only way I can give him the panacur c is to dilute it in water and give it to him with a syringe
