Grooming a GWP

Post by sunstone » Thu Dec 05, 2013 10:25 pm

Does anyone have a video link for properly grooming a GWP? I know how to strip a coat out but how much and what should the dog look like when finished?

No one answered because there is no right answer to this question. If you are trying to achieve a show coat it could take several coat cycles to get to what people consider the standard.

If you are just handstripping to remove dead coat and even the length over the whole dog look for wires that are starting to get narrow at the base and the ones that pull out easily. I many cases, the area around the next and shoulders needs the most attention. Start there and see how the dog looks when all the dead coat is out.

Grooming a wire haired dog is a process. I would strip out all that needs to be, if that helps. The next cycle should produce more even coat and probably harder coat.

I like to use the rubber page turners you put on your fingers. I think the look is more natural.
