My dog just ate lots of chocolate

Post by aulrich » Fri Dec 13, 2013 7:25 pm

It seemed the boys were not monitoring and the dog ate 1.5 large toblarone bars, I am not sure when but in the last few hours.

Should I be panicking now?

Is it milk chocolate? Bakers chocolate is what you need to worry about.

He will probably be fine, might get diarrhea

If a dog eats something like this a couple tables spoons full of hydrogen peroxide will make him puke it right back up

Hydrogen peroxide. My GSP did the same thing. A friend was here whose dog died because he ate chocolate and the vet told him to make the dog drink peroxide, but it was too late. So I took her outside and made her drink a few chugs to make her throw it up. It took 4 attempts before she finally threw it all up, but it emptied her stomach. I waited a few minutes before each drink. I just watched her to see her body language and you will be able to tell when it is about to happen. After that, she was fine. She did throw up one more time through out the night sometime. It doesnt hurt the dog, it just foams really bad in their stomach which makes them puke. Its too late now and I hope your dog is alright, but next time you will be ready. And as stated above, the dark chocolate is really bad, milk chocolate has less cacao in it and not as bad but still bad in quantity.

Syrup of Ipecac is good to keep handy to induce vomiting.

All is well, I took him for a run that night to burn the sugar though he was still a bit hyper the next day and ran him again.
