What's the best video cameras for self hunts?

Post by mister2 » Wed Jan 08, 2014 11:49 am

I'm looking for a good quality compact video camera. What brand and model video camera does everyone use for recording self hunts and what features make it the best?

I had a Gopro Hero 2 with extra accessories which I just gave away for $75. Didn't like it because the wide angle POV made everything look so far away and there was no zoom option. Took a few deer hunting videos and even at 20yds they look like tiny rats.

I just got a hero 3 myself and I know what you mean about the wide POV. I cranked it down to narrow and looks much better and much more like a normal video.

Really it is going to come down to how much do you want to spend. I've used a cheap $200 HD video camera for the past two years but am upgrading to a Canon XF-100 for this upcoming season.

You also might want to consider a DSLR for your video.

The guys on the beagle pages always do a ton of videos - the site I like to peruse is http://www.rabbithuntingonline.com. I bet there is some discussion on video cams on there. Seems like every other guy that has a pack has a video camera.

It would be cool to have this as an accessory to a go-pro!

My cousin is into video and editing and he showed me a video at Christmas that they had done with the assistance of one of those helicopter things and a go pro. Of course the main video was recorded by a high end recorder but it was neat to see.

Wow the canon xf100 looks nice but a bit out of my price range. I'm looking for around $300. Looking for compact, average video quality, average battery life, mounting option and good low light video.

The go pro was pretty good for mounting to a gun barrel or bow stabilizer, at least until the actual shot and then it would vibrate like crazy and distort the shot anyway.

I have hunted two seasons with the go pro and love it!

Here is a little video of a two day woodcock hunt to give you a flavor. You learn how to put the sun at your back (as you will notice I move into position with that in mind). It helps capture the action.

make sure to adjust the settings to watch in HD.

I think I was using medium. first year I used wide and like stated it looked too far away even close shots. I think this gives a pretty good perspective without having a chance to miss any action. I tried the narrow but missed lot of action up or over.

thanks, with cold temps and depp snow was fun to watch that video again for me!!

Yeah the wide is awful! I used the narrow today when out walking the dog and it looks good but you miss a lot on the sides.

I run a Canon Vixia HF21 and a GoPro. I really like the added perspective the GoPro brings. If used correctly, it can produce some awesome footage

Last week at pheasant fest,we stopped by the garmin booth and they have a new camera. It was called the virb. Has anyone looked into this video camera? It looked pretty good and they also had a dog mount from a different company. I am pretty interested in getting a camera and want to know all of my options.

I would go with Go Pro3. But dont waste your money on the black. Silver is fine. It als has the "One button" feature that saves battery life and starts to record the instant you turn it on. When my dogs go on point, I turn it on.
Here are a couple 45sec to a minute long videos of wild rooster points and kills in Iowa this year. You will have to change the youtube setting to 1080 HD to view the best quality.
I have my Go Pro set to Narrow. Ths brings the footage on just a bit more.

The GoPro does a pretty good job if you put it on the narrow FOV

The video ive shot with a Contour HD mounted to my dogs was nearly unwatchable. Ha dheld video cameras are a dime a dozen on ebay or local classifieds.
