Excessive Barker

Post by Muygrande » Tue Jan 14, 2014 2:08 pm

I have a new GSP pup that is going to be one heck of a bird dog but he is the noisiest dog I have ever seen. When I put him in his kennel he will bark constantly for as long as an hour. I have had pointers and Britts that barked a lot but they usually would stop once they realized they weren't going to get their way, this guy will just keep going. I have given him a couple of good scoldings and he stops for a while but the next day he goes right back to it. Any ideas are appreciated.

I roll a towel up, then put duck tape on the middle to hold it together. I toss it underhand at the dog if he is barking or counter surfing. He stopped barking and counter surfing after two days. Sounds crazy but it works.

A spray bottle filled with water.Works for barking, roughhousing in the house, counter surfing.I just have to reach out to grab the bottle now and my dogs settle right down.

+1

When I was doing retrieve training for several years, I would have new dogs that would bark all night at the city noises. I would just haft to go out and hose them a couple times, w/o saying a word, and within 2-3 nights, all was quiet for the rest of the time they were there.

Next choice was to put dogs up in crates indoors with soft radio music and that also would take care of the problem.

yep! Though if hightailyn's idea of putting dogs up in crates indoors with soft radio music works, I'd personally try that...first.

I use shoes, they are easier to find around my house. Now all I have to do is pretend to bend down and take one off and my dogs hightail it for their beds. I also never underhanded one at my dogs.
