Garmin astro
What do you do to the astro before you hunt? I make sure mine are updated, and charged. I also calibrate the compass and select start new hunt. I heard people say to clear the tracks every so often, does selecting start new hunt clear the old tracks? Also, do you use the short or long antenna for the handheld? Thanks.

I occasionally calibrate the compass...the noted direction is fine if you know where north lies....regardless of the pointer and calibration, ime.ruffbritt4 wrote:What do you do to the astro before you hunt? However, it is quick and easy to do if one needs to check.
I never use the tracks...I never erase them....possibly I should, to reduce clutter somewhere in the machine.
I never choose a "new" hunt.
I only occasionally carry batteries but do endeavor to keep the unit charged....hunting a loop is rarely past 2 hours for me.
Use of the Astro, again for me, is mostly if a worst case need arises....the Astro's marketable geejaws and gimcracks I can do without.
I prefer the short antenna...I tried the longer one but the reception for me was the same and the shorter one is less in the road...I like the short antenna when I pull the Astro from my pant's pocket.
I would not be without an Astro-ish device but I do wish they were simpler by 20X.....nothing more than distance and direction would be fine.
