Cover Dog

I see the term "Cover Dog" in some of the posts. Can someone define that for me.

Painting in a wide brush stroke, coverdogs usually mean one of two things: those dogs that hunt ruffed grouse and or woodcock "in the woods" and (primarily) competition trial dogs that compete in "coverdog trials" which are held on wild ruffed grouse or woodcock in the woods.
