Training the Sporting Dog
Training the Sporting Dog
In all of the inquires from people asking what a good resource is for training whether it be book or videos.. I have not seen many, if any recomend the book, "Training the Sporting Dog" by Donald Smith and Elvin Jones. I find this book to be a great resource at times..
I was just curous if any else has or uses this book?

Re: Training the Sporting Dog
Hear, hear. Up until I last used it for training a gundog - 10 years ago - it put anything else out there to shame with its comprehensive approach. If anything's come along surpassing it since, I ain't seen nor heard tell of it. On the comprehending end for a trainer, it's beautifully written, too.

Yes it is an old book but a great one.. it is very comprehensive as you said which is what i like, it doesnt leave you asking whats next? there are lots of more recent videos in such that are great to add to the book.. I agree, this book is certainly at the top of my list.

Re: Training the Sporting Dog
Probably , no without a doubt, the best book on training all gun dog breeds ever written.
Re: Training the Sporting Dog
No book explains more succinctly the steps, progressions or building blocks of training. Worth every penny....Don Smith, if anyone hear knows him, has an amazingly rational and organized mind.
Re: Training the Sporting Dog
This is exactly why I posted this.. its an awesome book but never hear any one recommend it.. I strongly advise anyone who ask for good sources for training, novice or not, to buy this book among other videos.. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this way..
Re: Training the Sporting Dog
After reading your post I tried to find the book .Cheapest one was 83.00 on amazon. I've got 5 weeks to go before picking up GSP pup and have read a few books about training and raising pups . My tops are Delmar Smiths Best way train and How to raise a puppy By The Monks of New Skete. Id like to get a hold of Train. the Sporting Dog , just not at 83 $
Re: Training the Sporting Dog
