You do not need to have a back but if the situation arises a missed back will put you out.

CKC requires a back to be recorded in order to award FC or AFC.

A back is not required but you can't call your dog off one either. The opertunity present's itself, the dog has to do it.

The only time your dog will need to back will probably be before you teach your dog to consistently back... It just happens that way.

Back in the old days we used to have to have a back for a placement. If a dog did not get one on course, a set up situation was done in a bird field. Dog was placed on point, other dog brought in to back. It turned into such a set up situation that proved nothing, that it was removed.

If a dog encounters another dog on course on point, the dog must back if the situation works out.
