Hacking cough

Post by Gertie » Thu Apr 03, 2014 10:18 am

Yesterday afternoon I noticed my female setter coughing and acting like she was trying to hack something up. She's still doing it this morning. Any thoughts on what might be going on? I was thinking she might have something caught in her throat but I'm not sure what to do about it.

Maybe kennel cough?

If she's a chewer ( sticks or other slivery stuff) or has been in area with awns, and you have someone to help keep her mouth open, you can use a flashlight to look in there. If you don't see anything and she keeps hacking I'd make a trip to the vet. That awn stuff is too scary to risk.

Grass awns shouldn't be a problem this time of year.

Decided to play it safe and went into the vet. Turned out to be an upper respiratory infection/sore throat. Dr. gave her an anti-inflammatory and told me to call back if it persists more than 5 days. Did not want to give antibiotics unless we have to.

Good, something like that and it's off to the vet.

LOl

I always ask the age when talking about coughing.

I have a coughing 14 year old - heart murmur.
