Owens DIY dog box?

Post by RuttCrazed » Fri Nov 17, 2006 2:21 pm

Has anyone had any experience with these kits?

http://www.boards4less.com/owdoityodogb.html

I talked to them yesterday and they said because of the fact that they can send the box UPS, there is no additional shipping charges.

I have truck with a shell on it, so I am not too worried about the wood being exposed to the elements.

Any comments?

You could have a metal shop cut the side out of Alum. Diamond Plate and either use small bolts or rivets instead of wood.
Just a thought.

The sides are wood?

Peak,
Thanks for the offer.

Ohiogsp,
Yes, all the sides are wood, you basically get the doors and frame for the sides.

The box will likely be in a covered pickup bed all the time, so I am not concered about the weather breaking down the wood.

I sell Owen's boxes. I sold one of the DIY's to a younger kid and he and his dad finished it. It is a great box and he is very pleased with it. He went with it because of price. Being out of the elements in the back of your truck I don't see why it wouldn't last you forever. Good Luck.

I work at a glass company and I think that you could get some Mapes panels and then you would have some insulating qualities except for the front of the box.

I was looking at the stuff in the shop and was wondering how I could make a box out of it and this would work perfect for it.
I have bookmarked this site for future use. So next year I can make one.

There is some stuff that is pretty light to keep weight down.
You could check with a glass company and see if they have any scraps or buy a 4x8 sheet and cut it up.

This is what I am talking about.

Wow, this is a great idea! It seems like a guy could build one of these kits fairly easily. I noticed how deep the box is. Seems a bit deeper than I would need for my brittany's. Does anyone have dog boxes that they use for their brittany's and if so how deep are they? It would be easy to modify the DIY box to a different depth. I just don't want to sacrifise my bed space in the pickup with a deep box if it isnt needed.

I really like the idea of updating the DIY plans with some diamond plate and then tigging it all together.

Wish they had a three hole model.... but we can't have it all.

Maybe there are some suppliers out there that have the doors pre-built so that I can build one to my own specs. Sorry just brainstorming here a bit. Has someone already built one this way, meaning by buying the doors and welding up the comparments and vents themselves?? Is it difficult to find the vents and other accesories to do it?
