My Dog and field mice

Post by natel24 » Sat Apr 19, 2014 2:02 pm

my adult gsp's favorite pass time now that spring is here is digging up field mice nests, i've tried to break him of it but that seems impossible. does anyone else's dog do this? this isn't random hole digging because i have seen him with the mice at least a dozen times this spring. he has dug some holes so deep that he can no longer dig with his paws and he start's to "bite" the dirt out. i'm just getting tired of back filling the holes.

Watch for tape worms if the dog is eating mice or baby rabbits.

My first lab use to dig holes so deep you couldn't see her in the field, just dirt flying from a hole. She would use her mouth to bite the top layer of roots and grass so she could continue her mass mouse genocide. After a hour or two she would come back up to the house and throw up mud and mouse pieces for the next few hours.

Sounds bored and idle. More exercise and mental stimulation.
