Post by dog dr » Mon Apr 28, 2014 12:50 pm

I know this has been done a hundred times before, BUT... for the life of me I cant come up with a name for my new Brittany pup. Its a male. Last one was Chief, and i currently have a Ranger. Suggestions please!

Keep the names coming! I have a male pup coming home in a few weeks too...and so far we've been calling him "new boy". I've had Courage, Zach, Blaze & Forrest.

I usually stick with tough guy type names like Gage, Trigger, Gunner but my wife digs people names for pups. The next one will be Robert.

Axel (or Axle)

You can get a lot of dog names by Googling "dog names" or "popular dog names".

For a call name I like short, one hard syllable words like Doc, Jack & Jake. The registered names are wide open except if you want to consider the poor FT Secretaries that have to fit long German or Mexican names in the FT Forms. :?

I go through different phases with names. Used to focus on old west names like Kid, Doc (Holiday) Bart etc. I try to incorporate a famous ancestor's name in the registration like (for Brittanys) Ajax or Gambler's etc.

I like old 60's music so names like:

Day Tripper, "Trip"
Boom Shak a Laka, "Sly"
Sha do run run, "Bill"

We just recently got a GSP pup for which we had prepared a 'shortlist' of about 30 names. It still took us 4 days to choose a name after we got the pup. It (of course) was not a name from the carefully considered list. Sometimes, you just don't know the name until you know the pup. By the way Elkhunter, I know a lovely working stock dog named Hammy, it really is a great name. We have had three Britts, and Hammy is perfect. Cheerful and fun, just like those great little dynamos.

Oh, we named the GSP Speck, as in Speckled Trout, after my Dad's favourite fish which he pursued all his life. Dog Dr., you will know the name when you see your pup's face. I know you'll pick a good one.

One of my son's first words (one of the first 5!) was "katie-no" Katie being our dog and Katie, NO! Being stated rather often as she was growing up. He would stand in his Pj's at the storm door, point his finger at the door and say "katie-no" all like one word.

I have a Rooster - my red dog. I decided much before I started pheasant hunting. I do get a lot of crap from people about his name, but I'm a huge John Wayne fan so I went with it.

Yep, Rooster Cogburn, that's why I liked it too. The wife hates it though, so I would probly get vetoed anyway.

Try some literary characters, like these from Shakespeare:

Mercutio "Merk"

Oberon "Obie"

Funny, I have a 14 month old Vizsla named Rooster. He is also turning out to be a heck of a dog but I named him in honor of a dog that I sent to Colorado who was shot and killed.

How about Marshal to go with Rooster Cogburn.
