Re: Large or Small Stake
IMO the smaller stake is plenty. Why waste time and effort pounding longer stakes if you don't need to. You can always replace the chain or clips if you want something different/longer, I'd go w smaller.
Re: Large or Small Stake
I have the small and one of my smallest pups under a year old pulled it out twice so I changed to the large.
Re: Large or Small Stake
We have some long ones and they are good for use in sandy soil or when the ground is really wet, like in the spring. They go in easily and come out easily. But Lord help us if we're staking out around tree roots, rocks, or hard packed dirt. If we get 'em pounded in, we're looking at a nightmare getting them out again. So mostly we sink them like they were the shorter ones. Our dogs don't generally work at pulling their stakeouts out of the ground so it works out ok.
I'd go with short ones unless you'll be using them in loose sandy dirt.

I ordered the long ones, how big of a hammer should I get to knock these into the ground?

A one hand 2 lb.sledge will do the job with no problem unless on rocky ground.

My dogs will pull the short ones out. I have both but always use the long ones with no problems. Really no way of knowing until you try them.
