Dog licking tail

Post by Mr. Crappie » Sun May 25, 2014 8:06 am

I have a two year old female pointer that has developed a habit of licking her tail. She gets flea treatment every month and has been looked at by a vet. Any advice on how to get her to stop. The "cone of shame" is not an option.
Thanks

I have looked into using a product called bitter apple spray. Anyone ever use it?

I would use it, definitely worth a try. I have used it but not for that.

If she's licking around the base of her tail, check her anal glands.

As shags said - anal glands , worms, vaginal infection ( viral or bacteria) - but if the vet checked her for that then ??????

Thanks for the advice. This started late last year. She had a bout with fleas and I think we have them under control now. I believe it's more habit now than anything. She seems to lick the tip to about three inches below. She is wormed and the vet thought it to be caused by an allergy. I'm thinking a flea allergy.

Could be nervous energy. Run her real hard for a few days and see if the behavior gets better.

You can try Benadryl. Better yet, the generic(way cheaper) version with the same active ingredient - Diphenhydramine. It doesn't make dogs sleepy like it does people. You can find the correct dosage online for dogs. Or, ask your vet.
