Participating in other dog sports

Post by CDN_Cocker » Fri Jun 13, 2014 6:43 pm

Does anyone here test/trial and compete in other dog sports as well? We have a local flyball club here which I'm sure my turbo dog would excel at but I would not want get into it if it would interfere with ability for tests and/or trials. .. opinions?

No "parlor games" for me.
If it's not directly related to the dog's real purpose in life (hunting) I say No Thanks.

Back when we first got Nittany we did flyball with him. He loved it and it was another way to keep his conditioning up. We learned to work together and it had no negative affect on his hunting. He was smart enough to run just fast enough to beat the dog he was running against (he didn't beat all the dogs- some can really fly). The veteran dogs knew the difference between practice and racing. Here is a picture from his racing days:

For the dog , it's like fun in the back yard, and another opportunity for exercise. I can't imagine it would interfere with hunting skills.

There should be no problem. If the dog enjoys it, they will learn what it is taught or allowed to learn. They have ALOT more space in their brain then most people think.

Obedience competition here. If your dog is a housedog and if you want him to be a genuine part of your entire life -- not just bird work --, some level of obedience work is mandatory.

That said, any other dog sport is good for everyone involved, and the training will enhance all around skills and conditioning for both of you.

Don't take my first post wrong.
There is certainly nothing wrong with other Dog Games.
It's just that for us, between actual hunting and Hunting Dog Games, we don't have time for anything else.
