Baby pigeons dying

Post by mountaindogs » Mon Jul 07, 2014 12:17 pm

I have one pair of pigeons who's babies never mature. They hatch and make anywhere from few days to a few weeks and the die. They don't seem sick or weak prior to dying I just go in the coop one day and find one dead and the next day I find the next on dead. Today I found both dead at about 4 days old. Parents are healthy eating, drinking etc...
Other pigeons pairs in my flock have raised babies normally. Any idea what going on?

They might be bad parents. But I would do a dose of 4-in-1 medication to be sure it's not a medical issue. I have seen a lot more successful hatches since I started a more regular worming/treatment schedule.

I have fed part wheat for years and I think every flyer does without a problem. I would guess it is young bird disease and you might try 3 or 4 days of Terramycin in the water.

Add in antibiotics while babies are present or now or both?

Some of my squeakers seem to gorge and eat too much when I feed. Their crops would be packed full to overflowing. Ii always wondered if the dry food expanded more than they could handle when the drank. I started feeding up high and offering only a small amount down low after the older birds are mostly full and seems to have fixed that.
