Raising Quail or Chukar

Post by RichK » Thu Aug 28, 2014 1:08 pm

What type of setup do I need to raise quail or chukar?

Do I need a completely enclosed setup for any part of raising these birds or will an outdoor solution work?

How much room per bird?

Would something like this work?

Need netting or wire inclosed or they will fly away

Looks like your bird mobile home will work

Space really depends on how many birds and how long you will hold them.

Chukar are much more hardy, I used to raise Wisconsin jumbo quail as they were almost as hardy as chukar. I tended to pack my birds because as soon as they were becoming mature they were leaving my flight pen.

Do some searching but some of the university extension websites have good info on raising birds. U of NC comes to mind.

I couldn't remember but this sounds correct. I usually purchase 50 at a time so I forgot the original plan.
Hope this helps !

a traditional 4 ft x 4 ft Johnny House works well for up to 25 quail.

Nice to see the alma mater helpin out!

I have a 10x10 covered pen, basically penned in one end of a shed. We have 200 5 week old bobwhites in there now and they have plenty of room. They will stay until we start huntin them at 16 weeks

I'm not sure on the exact measurements needed per quail, I think it's 1x1 each. The one you have pictured looks to be a 40' flight pen which you should be able to fit 400 Adult birds in.

Best set up I ever saw was a guy here in Oregon. He's got a really nice flight pen and every spring tills it up and plants a cover crop in it. Attached is a good size building with wood shaving floor and hanging heated lamps. The chick's are put in there until ready to go outside. Then when they go out, he has a trap door that opens into the flight pen. He open's it and lets them find their own way out. Usually by that time his new cover is growing and outside they have cover to hide in. The time I was there he had birds out in the flight pen but you couldn't see one! Great set up!!! I've watched his birds in trials a number of years and they are the best flying spookiest birds I ever saw.

Tried to find the link but couldn't. There is a video of that guy's setup, and by the end of the process, those birds were as close to wild as I think it's possible to achieve.
