Johnny House Quail
I build a 4x4 johnny house with the ledge at the top for them to fly up to and look out. I kept them in longer than I should have and now they dont fly well at all. I started letting them out once a day to recall, but they just kind of jump out of the door at the top and land on the ground and walk around. Some of the birds can barely get up to the ledge.
Will these bird get there wings build back up by letting them out once a day, or should I get some new birds that fly well and start over? They were pretty strong flyer when I got them.

Go by 4 or5 Times a day slapping the sides to make them fly, or better send a puppy. It is odd. Letting them out isn't going to help.
What are you feeding?

I didnt think it would help much if they are just walking around not flying at all.
Im feeding a starter/grower pellet?
Feeding on the floor, not much room for a feeder up the top, but I could prolly rig something up.

Re: Johnny House Quail
How tall is your house? Do you have solid sides so they can't see out?

Re: Johnny House Quail
I put a 18" tall board that divided the pen so water was on one side and food on the other. it helps some.
Re: Johnny House Quail
Never had a Johnny house but most I've seen have been taller than yours. I would try feeding them up top too, that way they are forced to fly up there every day.
Re: Johnny House Quail
I throw bread or lettuce up on the shelf it is easier than trying to get a feeder up there. They seem to like it.
Re: Johnny House Quail
4' up isn't very much. I had some three year old's that didn't fly well. I released them and didn't let them get back in. Few days and they flew like wild birds.
