Ruffed are the best tasting of all upland birds - IMO. The hardest to hit - at least here in the Northwest woods where most of our trees don't lose their leaves. When they flush, you have a mini-second to get a shot before they are GONE! Great pics!

Years ago I had a Browning Double Auto with a 26" skeet barrel on it, death on grouse. Then got a Rem 870 special field when they first came out, another one deadly on grouse. Neither were any good if I had lots of time to shoot. Point and shoot great, but follow through, nope. My son has that gun now.

Well, today my 20g Citori Feather and me weren't fast enough. I had a chance at two grouse that looked EXACTLY like the two in in this thread! I was anticipating the flush to be straight up and into the forest, but it flushed right to left and I was not fast enough and shot behind it. But, I know where they live now . . . and the dogs and I will be back.

Out of curiosity, what do the grouse look like where you hunt Sharon?

I ask because at least 90% of the birds I've seen in MN and ND are the brown phase...

By me there are more gray phased grouse than the other two colors I see.

LOL Sorry. I wasn't thinking much that day ; I expected more red. Not many ruffed where I live, we have to go farther north for Spruce Grouse.

Grange, I suppose I see brown and gray but they are almost indistinguishable to me.

Sharon, I hope I didn't come off sarcastic or rude... That's not how I intended it. We have Sprucies here as well but I try to leave them alone. I don't like the way they taste.

Not at all. I was laughing at my stupidity. I know you; you're a gentleman.:)
