Would You? (puppy question)
Would You? (puppy question)
I'm taking my broke setter out tomorrow to go chukar hunting with a friend who also has a broke dog and an older pup (not sure where that pup is training-wise). So, I'm wondering if I should put my 4 mo setter pup on a check cord and have her come along (someone would hold her back when we get into bird work)? Thoughts?

"someone would hold her back when we get into bird work" I'd take her for sure . ( I know you wouldn't take a pup that wasn't conditioned to the gun.)

Where are you hunting chukar?

Might want to bring two other buddies without dogs to help....two hunters , two broke dogs, two young dogs = circus to me.

Re: Would You? (puppy question)
If your dogs are hunting dogs and you don't plan on running any events, don't worry about the pups. Just don't shoot any birds your broke dog moves on. In that respect, if you're looking to do some serious hunting and your goal is to put birds in the bag, I'd bench the pup. If you're okay with letting a few get away for the sake of your dogs' training, take the pup out.

I would not and do not run two pups together. You could take your broke dog and pup, if the pup is used to gunfire, in one direction and your hunting partner could take his and go another. Two pups together usually spells a wreck.

Fran, we were on the lower Deschutes. Decided to run the two broke dogs together and keep the pup with us on a check cord. Actually worked out great and the pup got a good experience out of the deal without getting in the way. Fun day!Fran Seagren wrote:Where are you hunting chukar?
