Distant shooter gunshy

Post by Smathers003 » Wed Nov 05, 2014 10:47 am

My dog is a 2 yr old cocker and he is not gunshy when I shoot. When another hunter fires in the distance he freezes up. How can I break him of this?

My young dogs often do this when they have learned that a gunshot means birds. I have even had them take off looking for whoever shot.

My pup is 1 year old and started doing this occasionally. I have been getting her back in the game by saying find me a bird or use the come command to get her moving. Seems to be working. In time I'm hoping she figures out those distant shots don't mean anything to her.

Had this problem when mine was young too... just keep her nose full of feathers & she'll figure out it's like the "fun" bell...

My two year old vizsla did this recently but it definitely wasn't him just looking for the shooter. We were at soccer practice and someone must have been dove hunting in the distance and when they shot he tucked his tail and dropped his ears and got nervous acting.
He's been hunted over a bunch and is going to start MH tests this year so he's definitely not gunshy. Who knows..

My cocker has been much better the last two days. Every time we go out he gets more into the hunt.
