Is silver ever a GSP or Pointer color?

Post by GSP4ME » Thu Jan 08, 2015 10:08 am

Friend of mine at work was looking for a dog - just mainly as a pet/running companion not so much for hunting. Anyway, he sent me a link to an ad he saw on craigslist asking, "Have you ever seen a GSP this color". I have not but wondered if there was any precedent for it without there being some Weimaraner or??? thrown in along the way.

Last pic sure looks like it has weim in it. I bet they would be great running partners though n

It is a dilute gene that exists in some lines of GSP. It is not an accepted color and is a fault that should not be bred for.

I believe the Weimar and gsp were once registered under the same stud book. A Weimar owner posted some pics of a Weimar that looked very similar to that, a Weimar with white and liver spots.

Definitely looks like a Weimer in the woodpile somewhere along the lines

Thanks for the replies. I was just curious. He decided to go a different route and get a grown dog once I told him how long he'd have to wait before a young pup was ready for long distance runs.

if you want a pet, go for it. If you want a GSP to do something with for yourself or the future of the GSP breed, walk away.

Yes, it occurs from time to time in GSP litters. A friend of mine in the Czech Republic told me one or two popping up over there from time to time and a person in Brazil sent me photos of her pup, from two GSPs, that has a 'silver' (actually a dilute brown) coat. I wrote a bunch of articles on my blog about Weims with white in their coat. In some of them I mention the GSP connection.
