Montana bird hunt
I am planning a return trip to Montana next September to chase upland birds. Can anyone recommend reasonable outfitters where can we pay for land access only as we have dogs and have hunted the state numerous times with full outfitters.
Thank you
Thank you

How were the bird numbers out of the bed & breakfast?
Re: Montana bird hunt
The Tillman's and their neighbors restrict the hunting pressure on their land, so numbers were good to very good the three years I hunted there. Pheasant numbers have been low all over North East Montana for the last several years. 2010, 11, and 12 were very good for Sharptail, and excellent for Gray Partridge (Huns). Expect to walk a lot for Huns late in the year, they are tough on dogs, big going pointers did well. Sharptails were easier to find and a lot easier for flushing dogs. Pointers just ate em up.
This year might be tough, winter was very harsh, lots of cold and snow may make nesting later than last year. So Later in October may be best time.
cjhills is right, there's plenty of good public access hunting in Montana. If you're mostly interested in Pheasants I'd look at Plentywood, lots of private land requiring written permission. Check out Montana's Block Management program. If you go to Plentywood, get reservations at Sherwood Inn early. It's the only place to stay and fills up quickly.
