Very proud of my GSP first field trail

Post by zjohn14 » Wed Jan 21, 2015 9:57 pm

Kettle my 6 month old female German shorthaired finished 2nd in the Carolinas pointing dog association amateur walking puppy class. If no one has ran in any of there trails I highly recommend giving it a try, just a great group an super nice people. I think the main reason we didn't win was because of little things I did wrong while handling, but I got tons of advice from the judges an some pros that were there. We had such a great time an met some of the nicest people. It's unreal how much I learned but now I gotta practice handling my dogs of horse back so I have my work cut out for me. I just truly love training my dogs an watching them hunt. Just thought I would share I'm a very happy an proud dad. God bless

Congrats. Enjoy the ride!

It's the horse that's expensive.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to you and Kettle.

I love to watch puppies ad derbies do their thing, especially puppies. You NEVER know what is going to happen... because the dogs have no clue either. The best of them are just so joyous and exuberant and so absolutely honest. They put it all out there, because it is their genetics telling them to do so.

Have fun with your youngster, but be careful with the junior stakes. Allowing a youngster too much freedom, too soon, can cause problems later on that can be difficult to deal with.

Patterning a youngster on foot and keeping it close is one of the better ways to go. If the dog has it in them to run in front of a horse, it will...when the time comes. If you keep the dog close and it learns to hunt with you and for you...when it is time for the dog to reach out, it will still want to do it with you and for you...and THAT IS HUGE.

The big going dog that hunts its heart out...for its handler...is the dog that comes home with the ribbon...most of the time. Even if it doesn't...it is the one I want. You will too.

Congrats Zack. Glad we got you down to your first trial and can tell you have put in the work with her. She did a real nice job. Her sister might have beat her Sun but kettle dang sure made the judges decision tough.

I am real proud knowing these pups were 6mos and 3 days old and are already showing a ton of promise for their future careers. I'm excited to continue watching them develop. After you come down and train a few more times I'll have you squared away on handling.

Thanks everyone!! Still have a lot of training to go but I have an awesome mentor, special thanks to you MillerclemsonHD, an congrats on placing first with Lucy an Lady they are very impressive to watch. I'm very lucky an blessed to have met so many people that are very knowledgeable in bird dog training. I can definitely say I'm hooked/addicted to the sport now. Hopefully that will be my first of very many more ribbons to come.

If you are interested in doing some training and coming to some trials let me know when you get down here. We hold a trial in Greenwood about and hour or so from Clemson in November. We train about 45 mins from Clemson as well.

Enjoy your time there it was an awesome 4 years for me.
