Re: pigeon problem
Is that a cooper? They are about the only hawks I've lost birds to. Redtails can't maneuver with pigeon's. I've had two of them get into a pen some years ago. Also had an owl get in one time. Birds left until I got the predator's out!
Re: pigeon problem
Looks like a female Cooper. They are bad news for pigeons.

Re: pigeon problem
Hey Don
I'm pretty sure it's an immature cooper. Found one of my red ferrals yesterday. I saw one of my homers bounce off the roof and hit the ground today. I think they were on the roof and tried to fly. I think once they are up flying they seem to hold their own better. Ran out and got it. The hawk flew up and landed in a tree. The red didn't make it the homer is alive but not looking to good. Even when it doesn't get a hold it rips them up pretty good. Missing a homer and five or six ferrals. I like to let them fly an hour or two every day but can't really afford to loose this many. Bad photo, used my phone and it wasn't that close. With all the quail around and my pigeons it's got a good food source. It's been hanging around all winter.

Re: pigeon problem
Could be a female. Not an expert. It's smaller than a northern Goshawk. It has the up and down streaks not the bars. And is definitely bad news.

Re: pigeon problem
I have had problems with "Sharp Shins" a smaller version of a Coopers. Catch em and relocate em. I caught one once and dizzied him up like a pigeon and tossed him in a bush in a nearby field. Solved the problem for about a year. By the way, for the record, he got up after about 5 minutes and flew away. They will come back. Had one home back after taking him about 100 miles away. They are a problem.

Double Trouble
Looks like I have 2 Cooper's visiting. Went out to see if the homers had trapped back in and there sat an adult Cooper's 8 feet from the coops looking at all the pigeons. The other day it was an immature up in the top of a tree.
Re: pigeon problem
I have a similar problem. Have had Coopers sitting right on the loft starring in. I was told by the guy I bought my birds from to keep the loft closed for the winter. If not, they remember the spot and it is a buffet for the hawks. I tried it and they did leave to find a new food source last winter, but have found their way back as soon as the snow started flying this year. I trap ferrels and use them to train with if needed. Don't care if they get caught.
