Looking for GSP info.

Post by laker » Mon Feb 02, 2015 6:11 pm

I'm looking at getting a GSP sometime this year. I hunt Grouse and Woodcock in northern Michigan. I currently run Labs in retriever hunt tests and I'm sure I will want to run the shorthair in pointing dog tests too.
I keep my dogs in the house about 1/2 the time so the GSP would have to have an "off switch" and be able to relax inside without being underfoot.
My question is this- Should I stay away from Field trial breeding? I know nothing about the different trials so I welcome any info or advice concerning the differences between field trial GSP's and hunt test GSP's. Thank you very much.

I would look at NAVHDA lines heavier coats for being up north and are true hunting dogs with a ton of versitally

I would check with shooter's shorthairs. They are in Michigan

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. (no pun intended)
I've got some research to do.

Abbe Lane has great versatile/NAVHDA line dogs. I am on my third GSP from them, he got a prize I Natural Ability at 4.5 months old, lives in the house, and comes to work with me all the time. Great nose, desire, and drive in the field with a definite off switch in the house. Fantastic temperaments on their dogs as well.

I would second the idea of searching out a NAVHDA type dog.
