Vizsla Breeder Help

Post by Waterfowler21 » Fri Feb 13, 2015 2:20 pm

Hi I am new to this forum and I have never owned a hunting dog (my family never had them growing up but I've always wanted one). I have been doing a lot of research lately and I think the Vizsla is a perfect fit for my wife and I. I really like the character and qualities they are known for and they are renowned hunting/family dogs. My problem is that I live in North Dakota and there does not seem to be any reputable breeders near my area. We are talking like a 12 hour drive to pick up the pup or have it air shipped (not fond of the idea). Does anyone know of any breeders in the area? I do not need a dog for shows or contests, just a good hunting buddy that my wife and I can start our family with. Any advice on breeders/Vizslas themselves or other dog info would be greatly appreciated! We have looked at German Shorthair Pointers as well.

Thank you!

I bought my last 3 from various breeders in Illinois. There seems to be a hotbed of Vizslas/breebers in Illinois. It was an 8 hr drive to get there, but worth it.

Thanks for responding! That's what I have seen just doing a quick internet search seems like every breeder within 800 miles is in Illinois haha. Very true I may have to just drive. I think that's about a 9-12 hour drive depending on which part of the state.

I know of a couple in Iowa if that is close enough for you.

I would suggest speaking with Lee Dosier at Rockwood Kennels in Baraboo, WI (vman on this site). Lee breeds excellent puppies that would fill your bill of hunting companion and family pet. Once you hear his philosophy on breeding and why he breeds what dog to what bitch you will be impressed. He also stresses the importance of and does an excellent job of socializing the pups while at his kennel prior to going to their new homes. The pups will be exposed to a plethora of sounds, situations, environments, etc. before going home with you. I speak with relative certainty when I say my next vizsla will come from Lee.

I will second Jenny and Tate Martinsen's just out side Sioux Falls. I did some work with then this after noon and they have a litter coming soon. I don't know if any are still avaliable. They have amazing dogs and are great people, you won't be disappointed if you go with them.

Hey thanks for the replies everyone. Much appreciated! I put a deposit down on a female from Rockwood Kennels out of Baraboo, Wisconsin. I could tell the second I got off the phone that Lee was my kind of guy. Can't wait to pickup my girl in June! I'll post pics when I have her. Thanks again everyone!

Good choice Waterfowler. You will be happy with Lee and happy with your new pup. The pup will arrive well socialized and exposed (be sure to contiue this process). Please share photos after the pup arrives.
