Gun dog organizations

Post by Jaeger54362 » Sat Jun 06, 2015 9:05 am

Hi everyone,

I've noticed there are lots of gun dog organizations that hold hunt tests. I'm interested, as I think it would be great to have my dog achieve any rank. That being said, I've noticed many organizations discourage Labradors (or any retriever breeds) in entering their contests  . Are there any Labrador-friendly organizations? I would greatly enjoy going to an event just to see what it's like and decide if it would be something my Lab pup and I should pursue!

Thanks!

The AKC hosts Hunt Tests. Have you looked into local clubs?

I just did a simple Google search and there are several links in Michigan for testing Retrievers.

Sounds like he want's to run his lab in pointing dog test's. A lab is a retriever and there are retriever test's with AKC. people selling labs as pointing labs should let the people who buy them know that AKC does not recognize the pointing lab. So it's retriever test's for retrieving breeds.

OK so a simple Google search for "pointing Lab hunt tests" will still yield some info. I know of nothing about retrievers competing with Pointers though.

United Field Trialers Association has events for Flushing dogs. Several of the labs running in events I host point before flushing. www.ufta-online.com has list of events, rules, contacts etc.

In UFTA if they point they can run in the pointing division. Not many in that division most of the lab guys run in the flushing division

Interesting, are there no contests for waterfowl? I realize I'm in the minority of this website by focusing more on waterfowl than upland game. Unfortunately, there are very few upland hunting opportunities around Lansing, MI. :| :|

I feel like I'm missing something. What's wrong with normal AKC hunt tests and trials? They certainly don't discourage labs... arguably they probably have the highest following. Then theres also HRC events

Also don't forget UFTA and NSTRA championships are recognized by the UKC. Therefore those championships will show on papers/pedigrees.

Hadn't thought about the no labs in NSTRA was just thinking about titles showing on paperwork.
