Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
I've seen many different themes over the years.
I've seen folks use Norse, Roman, and Greek mythology.
I've seen folks use civil war battle sites.
I've seen folks use country music musicians.
One of the more creative was a guy I know with Brittanies that used a french winery theme.
For the most part, I use a rather common and uninventive ww2 generals (pointers) and admirals (retrievers) theme for mine.

MLB centerfielders for the call names. The registered name for the draht follows the naming convension. The pointers registered name is "Put me in, Coach", a line from the song "Centerfield" by John Fogarty.

The german bred clubs using a name starting with the litter letter followed by kennel name makes the engineer in me smile.Az Draht wrote:MLB centerfielders for the call names. Love the baseball theme

One of my girl's registered name is "Prairie Star" and the other is "Desert Firewheel". Both are native wildflowers that I love.
Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
We went with Streams and Rivers, That led to Bow (River) and Arrow (Creek) but most folks still have to think twice to get the double meaning.

Our young male is named Northwaters Locomotion and call name Tug. My husband is a retired locomotive engineer . JJ was named after the show Good Times. Reg. name Sharp Shooters NW Mr. Motion.
Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
I have always had female dogs and always chose names popular in the late 1800's. Cleo, Delilah, Daisy until I got the new pup and decided to let the kids name it. I wanted Lilly or another name I cant remember. I got Jersey. It was originally with a z but I wouldn't allow it.

Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
The first thing I try to consider is any important dogs in the Pedigree then my kennel name. Having said that, we look at lesser known old west characters. I also liked using 50 - 60's music themes. Johnny is a Joker, She do Run Run, Day Tripper, Boom Shakalaka (Sly) etc...
Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
Well-we told our kids we were getting a pup and they can earn points toward naming him by doing chores. I did throw in last approval rights though... So after 7 weeks of getting a lot of stuff done around the house, clean bedrooms my kids (5 and 7) threw out the names they had "earned". Ended up with Olaf (after the snowman in frozen).. seemed appropriate since my PP is black. Previously I had a black lab named Casper... So they carried on the tradition!!! So his registered name is a combo of the top three that fit the litter (G) Ripsnorter's Gustav Olaf Bojangles.
Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
In the UK we have an Affix/Prefix which is unique to the Breeder.
So fer example ,every dog that is bred by a bitch here will have 'Polmaise' as a 'Prefix' to it's registered name .
I started alphabetically with 'North American Indian names' male and female . such as 'Polmaise Akecheta' . Any that are purchased as pups from another breeder would have the the Breeders name as a 'Prefix' .such as 'Stmachute Blue Scirrocco At Polmaise' .
It probably doesn't mean that much to the general public but as a theme it certainly helps breeders who have a 'brand' in deciding a registered name without much thinking involved as they just take the next one from the list ?.

I have daughter in preschool and we've got disneyland passes so, unfortunately for me, I didn't need the back story on Olaf. Cool! If you look in that direction you can find some pretty nice names.pato y codoniz wrote:Linda Harger is sharing your musical theme with her world class chessies...AZ Brittany Guy wrote:The first thing I try to consider is any important dogs in the Pedigree then my kennel name. It's not a theme for registered names but I have a pup coming and the breeder is calling it the Southern Comfort Litter and they are nicknaming the pups after kinds of Kentucky Bourbon.

Amusingly Southern Comfort isn't Bourbon...greg jacobs wrote:It's not a theme for registered names but I have a pup coming and the breeder is calling it the Southern Comfort Litter and they are nicknaming the pups after kinds of Kentucky Bourbon.

Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
Do you guys that use these unique names try to keep the call names somewhat related, or do they tend to differ greatly from the formal names? Just curious....I see some call names and don't see any relation to the registered name.
Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
I started using John Wayne as theme to name my dogs.

Some "old time" dog men just give them a short hard syllable call name because it travels further in the field. We had a NFC named Lobo's Klickitat County Line. Delmar McAlister the owner, a long time breeder, trainer and handler just called him "Jim".luvthemud wrote:Do you guys that use these unique names try to keep the call names somewhat related, or do they tend to differ greatly from the formal names? Re: Anybody using an interesting theme in naming their dogs?
Although I only have one bird dog right now there are already plans in a couple years to add another and my wife wanted to stay with archie comic book characters so if we get another brittany it will be Reggie and if we get a GSP it will be moose.

Speaking of old west, I have "little freckle faced Annie Oakley. My first pointing dog (Brittany). All names from her pedigree minus "Annie." I will try to use several names from the pedigree if I can make it work out. About to get another Brittany and a GSP; both males. This bird hunting is addictive!

As an afterthought, we (Brittany People) have another National Champion and his registered name is "Just Call me Roy".

I use Biblical references... I have a short list in my Bible (my wife gives me the elbow to the ribs when I ad one during the service) I ad my last name before these. I am SURE I will run out of dogs before I run out of names.

Agreed, I'm a religious man, but reading your post on sounded odd. Love the names looking at them!AZ Brittany Guy wrote:Great names - Great Theme!PntrRookie wrote:I use Biblical references... My GSP's are Heineken's Dutch Treat call name Heine, and 1xCH FC Smithwick's Hard Licker call name Smitty.
My daughter bought a little dust mop dog down in Key West and called him Key'ster few years ago.
We have a little saying around here now, " If you dont want to pat my Heine, you can kiss her Key'ster!"
