Plague
Plague
Bubonic plague has been found in many types of rodents here in Idaho. It seems to be spreading in all directions. Anyone planning a vacation or a hunting trip early in the season might want to be very careful with their dogs and themselves.

Wow! Didn't even know it was still around. Googled it and sure enough. That's mighty close to home. If it's in Idaho and Oregon odds are good it's in Washington.

Re: Plague
We get reports of it up here In the Mountains and High Plains of AZ with Prairie Dogs. Seems to come an go each year. I haven't heard anything from my Vet this year.
Re: Plague
Its actually more common than you would think. Its pretty well known to biologists that rodens can be reservoirs for plauge. It makes for good news, but the chances of you and your pet getting is pretty remote.
Re: Plague
I worked at the Snake River Birds of Prey in the mid 1970's. BP was pretty common in the Townsends Ground Squirrel population. We all got BP shots because we were handling TSG's that were prey species for the all the bird and mammal predators we were studying. Unless your dogs or you physically handle rodents you are pretty safe. A good flea prevention program is definitely a good Idea.
