Think Dog Has Poison Ivy

Post by Waterfowler21 » Thu Aug 13, 2015 6:49 am

Has a lot of bumps on her belly looks like she may have contracted a rash from it. What's the protocol on this? Vet or let it heal on it's own? As of now she hasn't been scratching or licking it.

Hard to tell from pics but I don't see anything that resembles poison ivy. Looks like a normal slight irritation, probably from running through weeds or anything tall enough to reach the belly. Don't worry about it but do watch it to make sure it doesn't develop into something. Chances are it will just go away.

WOAH! Did not notice the pics blew up that big haha. Sorry if it is hard to see! Thanks Ezzy, my concern with poison ivy was that my fiancé had actually picked it up camping last weekend so I thought it might have transferred.

I don't think dogs can be affected by poison ivy. They can transfer the oils to you though.

Depending on the dog and where you are exercising, it's possible it could be staph. Do the bumps look like they have any pus?

I am taking her into the vet as it looks like it got worse over the past day.

Those look like gnat bites to me, but they could be a reaction to something. Vet visit isn't a bad idea.

Yes we thought bug bites too but it was just weird how they were all over. They are up on the top of her head and back as well but mostly on her belly/groin/armpit area.

that does kind of look like poison ivy. your dog couldn't catch it from your fiancee -- I assume the dog wasn't in the same place your fiancee got exposed, right? But the dog could have gotten it from coming into contact with something that had the poison ivy oil on it, like clothing, blankets, a car seat, etc. good luck, I hope you get an answer to this mystery.

edit: of course, it could be just a coincidence, and your dog just picked up its own case of poison ivy, too

The vet took some skin cultures and didn't see any Bacteria so not a bacterial infection. We are guessing it was an allergic reaction to something, either her medicine she was on for her UTI (Clavomax) or laundry detergent. Or like we initially thought, poison ivy.
