Field Trial Setters, who are the major players?

Post by pato y codoniz » Fri Aug 14, 2015 4:59 pm

If a guy was looking for setter lines and breeders, that consistently produce quality horseback trial prospects, with a drop down to walking/nastra, what dogs/lines and breeders should they be aware of?

The guy's only personal preference would be to avoid the pixie sized dogs so 50lbs and up for males.

Thanks

It sounds like your looking for a Shadow Oak Bo pup.

I'm all dogged up.

A friend of the family, whose been running NASTRA and is recently retired, is looking for a couple of horseback prospects and has always wanted a setter.

Thanks for the lead...

If you are looking for a prospect or two I would start looking for some started dogs - If someone has a nice HB setter prospect, it may be tough to get them to sell. All pups are crap shoots and big running setters can be tougher even tougher to find. Sure Bo, Skyhawk and Jetsetter are the big stud names, but you need to find a breeder who is actually producing HB dogs. Skyhawk and Jettsetter are not producing pups any longer. Here are some names of breeders...not sure of what they have in pups or started.

Erins Kennels - Sean Derrig - Erins Hidden Shamrock
Ballpark Kennels - Scott Turner - Attitudes Iron Will
Dale Creek Gundogs - Tom Waite
Grouse Feather - Allen Dunbar
Skydance Setters - Dennis Lytinski
Skyview Kennels - Jason Patty
Carpenters Setters - Larry Carpenter
Smith Setters - Harold/Doug Ray
Merrit Setters - Terry Merrit
Shadow Oak Bo - JR/Diane Gates Family
There are some nice setters running out West but I am not as familiar with those.

There are some good dogs out west, a good friend of mine breeds and competes with some very nice setters. A lot of Richie's stuff is out of his stuff.

Just Study the Pedigrees of parents of any dog your looking at. Its a guess for anyone, the best you can do is see if the parents are winners/champions and if they come from other champions. The best trial dog in the world may not have a lot of champions in the pedigree because they just come from good dogs that aren't trialed, but its all you have to go by.. Shadow Oak Bo was 2x national champion, obviously an awesome dog but his pedigree didn't have a lot of known champion blood in the pedigree.

I would stay away from Shadow Oak Bo blood. He's been bred so much - maybe more than any Setter in current history - and not produced hardly a winner. Look up his title and see what he's produced. He may be a good dog, but he's an outcross and reproducing what he's got is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Jim Michaletz - is running some out of Jet - and Jet's sons

Up until 2013 I saw alot of nice young dogs - Drifter, AirBender etc

I am sure he is still developing some nice young dogs
